2010 Spoken English Test
1. Three students need to register for selective courses for their sophomore year. Each has his/her own opinion on how to make such decision. Student A holds that he/she wants to choose the course according to his/her personal interest; Student B thinks the practical application of the course is most important; Student C insists that he/she need to take the course taught by good teachers. Student D is a senior student who will give advice according to each student’s preference.
2. A and B are both managers of Human Resources Department in an international company. C and D are two graduate students majoring in computer science. Each interviewer will ask at least three different questions about their qualifications for the positions, and their plan on future career path. Then, interviewers will discuss who should be employed. Be sure to illustrate your reasons for your decision.
3. Four students will give speech on 4 aspects of good study habits, including time management, self-discipline, effective learning, and concentration for clear motivation.
4. After being away from hometown to Southwest University for more than one year, A has come back home in spring, and finds her/his parents B and C have been hooked on playing mahjong. A is worried about parents and asks them to quit gambling. But B and C say that they feel nothing to do and have become compulsive gamblers. A consults her good friend D and D
suggests that they should get help from a doctor and have a tough fight against gambling.
5. Four students will talk about the bad effects of cheating on exams. Hint: it makes the exam unfair or discourages good students.
6. Nowadays unemployment has become a serious problem in China, especially in some resource-oriented cities, such as Daqing, which depends heavily on oil, and Datong, which depends heavily on coal, etc. One student plays the role of a host/hostess for a talk show program “How to Solve Unemployment Problem in Resource-Oriented Cities”. The other three plays the role of an unemployed miner, the minister of the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, and the mayor. The host/hostess tries to illicit the solution to unemployment problem by asking questions.
7. Student ABCD are talking about things that contribute to a successful marriage.
(Hints: Trustworthy, commitment, love, facing conflicts straightly, fitting yourself in other’s shoes)
8. Is it still fair for wives to do all the housekeeping when she has a job? One student plays a feminist to strongly oppose it. Another student holds that it is better to be a housewife and focus on family. And the other students disagree with both views.
9. As a fresh graduate, which job will you pick, low-paid with a bright future, or a boring well-paid job? There are some critical elements to think about
when you start to build your career track. Students ABCD express their own thought on this topic.
10. Personality is very important for a person to find the right job. What kind of characteristics is an employer looking for? Each picks a single one s/he thinks most important. (Good interpersonal skill, team player, quick-learning,…)
11. Interviewees are examined thoroughly in all interviews. Not only your experience and personality but also your appearance is sized up. Initial decisions made about you in the first three minutes of the job interview are nearly irreversible. A are two interviewees and B and C is the interviewer. D is the head of human resources but not present at the interview. C will report the result to D.
12. What kind of boss do you expect? One describes how to be a successful boss. The other describes his expectation for a good boss. And the rest two make comments on their opinions.
13. If you wanted to start a business, which factors would you consider: your education and ability, your money or the market? Four students ABCD will express their expectation on this topic.
14. Should smoking be banned? Why hasn’t smoking in public been banned? Four students are discussing it from 4 aspects: government, community, family member and individual. Each student needs to pick an aspect. 15. Describe the damages that human caused to the environment, like
pollutions, species extinction, global warming and self-destruction as nuke. Or. Should we improving our living standard on the expense of the environment?
16. A has just started a company and is eager to make new connections. He plans to deliver some brochures at a reception. But B, his business counselor says NO to his plan and advises him to exchange business cards with other businesspeople. C, D give A suggestions about the business etiquette like shaking hands, exchanging business cards.
17. Discuss with group members about how you view social problems like nursing home abuse, drinking, and gambling in society. Students A talks about drinking, Student B talks about smoking in public, student C talks about gambling, student D talks about nursing home abuse.
18. Student A is a little worried about his/her first interview. S/he’d like to know how to behave on the day of interview. And students B, C, D are giving suggestions about the tips for interview from the aspects of dress, interview manner, and preparation for the interview questions.
19. Do you prefer to starting a company or being an employee in a company after graduate? Students ABCD are talking about the benefit and challenges of being self-employed or being an employee in a company. 20. Isn’t drive-under-influence a social problem for your and others’ safety. Please discuss it from the aspect of family, society, government and yourself.
