Do you forget to turn off the lights and heaters when you go out of a room? In 2040 it will not matter. They will turn themselves off --- and on again when you return. You will choose the temperature for each room, the lighting and the humidity(湿度). A sensor will find the presence of a human (and, with luck, ignore the dog!) and turn the systems on, and when the humans leave it will turn them off again.

The sensors will work through the central home computer, and they will do much more than just turn the fires and lights on and off for you. They will find faulty electrical appliances, plugs or switches, separate them so that they cannot harm anyone, and then warn you that they need repair. They will detect (发现) fire and if you are out of the house, the computer will call the fire brigade. It will not be too difficult because the locks on the outside doors will be electronic. You will open them using your personal card --- the one you use for shopping --- maybe using a number known only to you.

It will be impossible to lose the key, and a housebreaker will have to tamper (拨弄) with the lock or with a window. It is not very difficult to make such tampering send a signal to the computer.

The computer will be more than a fireman -- policeman-- servant. It will be an entertainer, and most of your entertainment will come right into your home. It does now, of course, but by 2040 “entertainment” will mean much more. For one thing, you will be able to take part actively, rather than just watching.

24. What will happen in 2040 according to the passage? A. We will live without lights and heaters. B. We will use much more lights and heaters. C. There will be no switches of lights and heaters. D. Lights and heaters will be on and off automatically.

25. According to the author, in 2040, new technology will ________.

A. free us from the keys we use today B. turn everything into sensors C. make the locks out of date D. get rid of all crimes 26. Thanks to computers, in 2040 people will ________.

A. have no entertainment outside B. have more fun at home C. be controlled by computers D. replace TV with computers 27. What might the best title for the passage be?

A. Lights and Heaters in the Year 2040 B. Sensors and Computers

C. Life at Home in the Year 2040 D. The Development of Science and Technology

While tofu is a household name in Asia, it has still not been completely accepted into the Western kitchen. When it arrived in the West, tofu found itself sitting alone in the food playground, ignored by

the other kids. And when tofu did make friends, it was only with the open-minded, peace-loving vegetarians sometimes referred to as “hippies”.

Why is it that such a staple (主要的) ingredient in the East has been subject to (遭受) such discrimination in the West? Well, tofu quite literally (简直) missed the boat. Tofu originated in China some 2, 000 years ago. But when the Europeans first arrived in China they ignored it. While rice was embraced with open arms and brought home with popular acclaim (称赞), tofu followed later and with much less success.

Growing up in Australia I only had a vague notion of what tofu was. It was just last year, when I lived in the Dutch town of Maastricht, that we were really introduced. In that town, lots of students choose to live in “squats”—old run-down factories rented out for very cheap prices. One of these squats holds a “Vegan Dinner” every Monday. In the dishes served there, tofu was a staple and I found that I quite liked it!

Slowly but surely tofu is becoming accepted into mainstream Western cooking circles. In March, the singer Justin Timberlake dressed up in a tofu suit for a sketch (短剧) on NBC’s show Saturday Night Live to promote the silky food. And notable UK food experts such as Nigel Slater and Fuchsia Dunlop are singing tofu’s praises as well. As Slater writes in an article published in The Guardian, “I think the Chinese know what they are talking about and I must give their beloved dou-fu(yet)another chance”. He found that when cooked with chilli, garlic and ginger, tofu was a very welcome guest at his dinner party! 28. When tofu was introduced to the West, it ________.

A. was not accepted, just like rice B. was viewed as a toy instead of food

C. was well-received mostly by hippies D. was difficult to find things to cook with it 29. The phrase “missed the boat” in the second paragraph probably means“________”. A. failed to take advantage of an opportunity B. was in the same situation C. experienced a big change D. drew much attention 30. The first time the author tasted tofu in Maastricht, she ________. A. had already eaten it in Australia B. developed a love for it

C. felt it was not her cup of tea

D. found that she had expected too much from it

31. By quoting Slater in the last paragraph, the author intends to show ________. A. tofu is becoming popular in the West B. it is beneficial to eat tofu now and then

C. tofu is becoming a staple at Western dinner parties D. a new creative way to cook tofu has been praised

D

Nowadays the U.S. students are sleepy in school because they spend too much time texting, playing video games, watching TV, and using the media in other ways.

“Heavy media use interferes with sleep by reducing sleep duration, making it harder to fall asleep, and lowering sleep quality,” Meilan Zhang, an assistant professor at the University of Texas at El Paso, wrote in her research review in the journal, Sleep Medicine.

But the relationship between youth’s media use and sleep is not so simple, said Michael Gradisar, who authored both that review and the Sleep Medicine meta-analysis. “Technology use is the new evidence when we are trying to answer ‘Why are school-age children sleeping less?’” said Mr. Gradisar, an associate professor of psychology at Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia.

There may be safe limits to technology use, Mr. Gradisar stated. For instance, recent research results indicate that using a bright screen for an hour before bed or even playing violent video games for less than that will not necessarily interfere with teenagers’ sleep, he wrote.

But longer periods of usage can be harmful to sleep, Mr. Gradisar added. Rather than delaying school start times, he said, the first step should be educating parents about limiting the hours that their children are using technology before bed, and enforcing a consistent bedtime.

Early school start times are also commonly blamed for students’ sleepiness, especially for adolescents. Secondary schools around the nation and the world have been delaying start times, often with positive results.

Mr. Minnich of the TIMSS and PIRLS International Study Center hesitated to put blame to any particular factor. But he did think that cost-saving measures to consolidate(合并)bus routes might help explain U.S. students’ sleepiness.

“For those children who board the bus first, they must get up earlier, may end up sleeping on the way to school, and may end up arriving at school sleepy.” he said. 32. Which of the following may be the best title for the text? A. Kids benefit a lot from technology. B. Several factors affect kids’ sleep. C. Some tips can help kids sleep well.

D. Several sleep troubles appear at school.

33. What would be the factors that cause kids sleep troubles according to the text? a. Using the media. b. Having breakfast. c. Catching the bus. d. The school timetable. e. Doing too much homework. A. a, d, e B. b, c, d C. a, c, d D. b, d, e 34. Which of the following may be the good way to help kids sleep better?

A. Parents should be well educated. B. Technology is forbidden at home. C. They are allowed to go to school early. D. Their playing time must be limited. 35. Who are most likely to be interested in the text?

A. The parents. B. The teachers. C. The officials. D. The researchers. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

The measure of a man’s real character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out. ----Thomas Macaulay

About thirty years ago, I was studying in a public school in New York. One day, Mrs. Nanette O’Neill gave a math 41 to our class. When the papers were 42 , she discovered that twelve boys had made exactly the 43 mistakes throughout the test.

There is nothing really new about 44 in exams. Perhaps that was 45 Mrs O’Neill didn’t even say a word about it. She only asked the twelve boys to 46 after class. I was one of the twelve.

Should the wallet, 57 in the street, be put into a pocket or 58 to the policeman? Should the 59 change received at the store be forgotten or 60 ? Nobody will know except you. A. common B. following C. unusual D. above 50. A. read B. copy C. sign D. recite 51. A. myself B. herself C. ourselves D. themselves 52. A. chance B. lesson C. accident D. memory

53. 54. 55. 56. 57. 58. 59. 60. A. even A. measure A. Either A. personal A. find

back to the road?

Dave: That’s true, too, although we all hope will never end. On the other hand, the
