13、Some time ago I discovered that one of my chairs had a broken leg. I didn’t think there would be any difficulty in getting it repaired, as there are a lot of antique (古董) shops near my home. So I left home one morning carrying the chair with me. I went into the first shop expecting a friendly reception. I was quite wrong. The man wouldn’t even look at my chair.

The second shop, though a little more polite, was just the same, and the third and the fourth. I realized that my approach must be wrong so I decided to try another way. I entered the fifth shop with a plan in my mind. I placed the chair on the floor and said to the shopkeeper, “Would you like to buy a chair? Twenty pounds,” I said. “OK. I’ll give you twenty pounds for it,” he said. “It’s got a slightly broken leg,” I added. “Yes, I saw that. It’s nothing,” the shopkeeper replied.

Everything was going according to the plan and I was getting excited. “What will you do with it?” I asked. “Oh, it will be easy to sell after the repair is done.” “I’ll buy it,” I said. “What do you mean? You’ve just sold it to me,” the man asked in surprise. “Yes, I know. But I’ve changed my mind. I am sorry. I’ll give you twenty-seven pounds for it.” “You must be crazy,” he said. Then, suddenly_________He shouted, “I know what you want. You want me to repair your chair.” “You’re right,” I said, “And what would you have said if I had walked in and asked you to repair my chair?” “I wouldn’t have agreed to do it. 14、 Mike Myers is a teacher at Chauncey Rose High School in Terre Haute, Indiana. Last year, he taught his students about the world’s rain forests. They learned that rain forests are important because the plants and animals of the rain forest give us food, wood, and medicine.

Destruction of the world’s rain forests is a serious problem. Unluckily, rain forests are disappearing at a rate of 80 acres per minute! As part of a class project, Myers’ students bought three acres of rain forest in Central America. They paid $25 per acre. The students hope that the land they bought will be protected and not destroyed. The students became so interested in rain forests that they decided to get a closer look at a real rain forest.

So last June, Myers and four of his students took a boat ride down a river. They saw alligators and crocodiles. In the middle of the week, a guide took Myers and his students into the rain forest. “The monkeys were not happy that we were in their forest. They broke small branches off the trees and threw them at us,” one of the students said, “It was a great learning experience for all of us,” said Myers.

Each student chose something specific about Costa Rica to study involving the plants, animals, food, and culture. During the last few days the group had time to do fun activities. They went whitewater rafting and horseback riding, and visited Costa Rica’s active volcano.

Myers hopes to make the trip every year with a different group of kids.

15、Animals can move from place to place, but plants cannot. When an animal is under attack, it can run away or fight back. Plants certainly cannot run away, and they have no teeth or claws. But plants can still protect themselves in both physical and chemical ways.

Some plants have their own ways to keep animals away. For example, the leaves of the hollies(冬青树) have sharp spines (刺) that discourage grass-eating animals. Holly leaves on lower branches have more prickles than leaves on upper branches. This is because the lower leaves are easier for most animals to reach.

Some plants, such as the oak trees(橡树), have thick and hard leaves that are difficult for animals to eat. Some grasses may contain a sandy material,so eating such grasses wears down the animal's teeth

Many plants also have the chemical defense. Some plants produce chemicals that taste bitter or cause an unpleasant reaction. Some plants may protect themselves by increasing the production of these chemicals. When a worm(毛虫) bites a tobacco leaf, the leaf produces a chemical smell.

Many plants depend on both physical and chemical defense. A certain plant in China, for instance, has prickly (多刺的) leaves, and each prickle contains poisonous water(毒液).Only one experience with this kind of plant will teach an animal to stay away from it in the future.

1.What can a plant do when it is under attack?

A.It can protect itself B.It can run away. C.It can fight back. D.It must die.

2.Why do the leaves of the hollies have sharp prickles according to the passage? A.Because they are lower.

D.Because they make grass-eating animals stay away. 3.How does an oak tree protect itself? A.It has leaves with a delicious material. B.It has leaves with sharp prickles. C.It has thick and hard leaves. D.Its leaves taste bitter.

4.What does the underlined word“sandy” mean in Chinese? A.含盐的 B.含沙的 C.坏掉的 D.腐烂的 5.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A.The hollies have thick and hard leaves. B.The oak trees have leaves with poisonous water

C.A plant has only one kind of way to protect itself, physical one or chemical one. D.A tobacco leaf produces a chemical smell when a worm bites it.

16、Have you ever run into a careless mobile phone user on the street? Perhaps they were busy talking, texting or checking updates on WeChat without looking at what was going on around them. As the number of this new “species(物种)” of human has kept rising, they have been given a new name˗˗˗˗phubbers.

Recently, a cartoon created by students from China Central Academy of Fine Arts put this group of people under the spotlight(聚光灯). In the short film, phubbers with different social identities always put themselves in their phones. A doctor plays with his mobile phone while letting his patient die, a pretty woman takes selfie(自拍照) in front of a car accident site(场地), and a father loses his child without knowing about it while using his mobile phone. A chain of similar events finally leads to the destruction(毁灭) of the world.

Although the ending sounds overstated(夸张), the damage(损害)that phubbing can bring is real.

Your health is the first to bear(承受) the effect and result of it. “Constantly(不断地) bending(使弯曲) your head to check your telephone could damage your neck,” Guangming Daily quoted(引述) doctors as saying, “the neck is like a rope that breaks after long-term stretching(伸展).” Also, staring(盯着) at telephones for long periods of time will damage your eyesight gradually, according to the report.

But that’s not all. Being a phubber could also damage your social skills and drive you away from your friends and family. At reunions(团聚)with family or friends, many people tend to stare at their telephones while others are chatting happily with each other and this creates a strange atmosphere, Qilu Evening News reported.

It can also cost you your life. There have been lots of reports on phubbers who fell to their death, suffered accidents, and were robbed of their telephones in broad daylight.

1.What does the underlined word phubbers mean in Chinese? _________. A.低头族 B.打工族 C.月光族 D.啃老族

2.For what purpose does the author(作者) give the example of a cartoon in Para.2? _____. A.To warn doctors against using telephones while treating patients B.To show the world will finally be destroyed by phubbers C.To advertise the cartoon made by students D.To tell people the bad influence of phubbing

3.Which of the following is NOT a risk a phubber may have? _________. A.He might get divided from his friends and family B.His neck and eyesight will be gradually harmed C.He will cause the destruction of the world D.His social skills could be influenced

4.Which of the following may be the author’s attitude(态度) towards phubbing? _________. A.Supportive B.Against C.Active D.Favorable 5.What may the passage talk about next? _________.

A.Advice on how to use a telephone B.Ways to reduce(减少) the risks of phubbing C.Results of phubbing D.People are crazy about phubbing

17、Most kids hate doing housework. However, not all hope is lost. There are some things that you can do to get your kids to help you clean your house. If you are struggling with the chores (家务杂事) and need your kids to help you, take a look at some of the creative ways in this article.

If you are dealing with older kids, you may want to try theallowancedeal. You can give your kids a list of chores that

need to be done each week. If they complete these chores, you can give them some money. You can also break the list down and tell them they will get so much for each chore that is finished. Older kids, who like to do things on weekends or buy things like video games, will work hard to complete their chores and earn their money. This is also teaching them duty. This is teaching them that they must work for what they want.

If you are dealing with younger kids, you may want to go with the rewards chart (奖励图表). This is where you design a chart and list their chores on the chart. For each chore they complete, you can put a red flower beside it. For the rewards, you also can do a number of things like going to the park, going out to eat, buying a DVD or something similar. The rewards would be up to you because you know what your kids like.

For real small kids, you can turn it into a game. When kids were much younger, you can teach them to dance around and sing as you cleaned. The kids loved it and would do a wonderful job at picking up their toys. So, consider turning cleaning into a game for the real small kids.

18、Bai Yansong, a famous TV host, expressed his support for students wearing green scarves (绿领巾) at a primary school in Xi’an. He wore a green tie on a TV program on October 19, 2011. “I just want the students to know that I’m also wearing green. And we are all great people and are as good as those wearing red scarves.”

The First Experimental Primary School in Xi’an made children with poor schoolwork and behavior wear green scarves. Parents whose children wore green scarves were angry. “The children still need their self-esteem (自尊心) even though they are very young, and they know the green scarf means something is not quite right,” said one mother. Now, the school has stopped the practice.

Educational expert Li Zhenxi said that primary and junior high school students have strong self-esteem. They are eager to be respected and understood. Punishment will hurt them. “It’s better to encourage them rather than separating some ‘bad’ students,” he said.

A survey made by the Ministry of Education (教育部) shows that 75 percent of students feel nervous and scared when the teacher is about to announce their grades. Some schools have done better in protecting students’ privacy and encouraging them. In American schools, teachers post test results on the wall. Instead of using student names, they use secret numbers. This way, students know their secret numbers and can check their own grades only. Some teachers might call the students up to the desk and tell them their scores one at a time.

But test scores are not the only measures of a student’s ability. Everyone has his own strengths and everyone can make great progress by working hard.

B.Because they thought the school didn’t have the right. C.Because it was against the law.

D.Because it hurts their children’s self-esteem.

3.According to the article, which of the following is TRUE?

A.Primary school students are too young to know what self-esteem is. B.Separating some “bad” students helps create good learning environment.

C.Most “good” students like their teachers to announce their scores.

D.Using secret numbers instead of students’ names can protect their privacy better. 4.Which of the following may the writer agree with? A.The green scarves system can make students work hard. B.Student’s ability should not be measured only by test scores. C.Students who get low marks should use secret numbers. D.Teachers should tell students their scores secretly one by one. 5.What does the word “measure” mean in the last paragraph? A.长度 B.尺度 C.方法 D.标准 Ⅴ.书面表达

I’m feeling a little unhappy while I am writing this because I am going to return to China. I lived in Tom’s home in

America when I studied in America. Though we had only studied together for a term, we were good friends. Tom is kind, friendly and helpful. We got on well with each other. He did a lot to help me with my English. My English has improved greatly with his help. I know more American culture. I really appreciate what he did for me. His parents took good care

of me. They tried to cook Chinese food for me. I will leave for China today. I hope his family will come to China one day. I am looking forward to seeing them in China again.
